Setting:
This book doesn't thoroughly explain when it takes place, but it mainly takes place in Carthya. You can also tell that it took place in earlier times because cannons were not yet spread throughout and there was no advanced technology yet. This time period is appropriate because if it were futuristic than there would not be able to be castles, pirates, and worries about castles, and it affected the whole story because if there was technology then they would be able to use nuclear weapons and then the war would be over quite quickly.

Favorite Scene: Loyalty
My favorite scene is when Roden and Orison are talking about Roden and how he got there. He got there because of Jaron, Jaron never gave up on him.“'Jaron never saw us as enemies. He risked his life to make me see that too.'” Roden shifted his position, as if suddenly uncomfortable with the turn of the conversation. “'I owe him everything.'”(Excerpt From: Jennifer A. Nielsen. “The Shadow Throne.” Scholastic Inc., 2013-12-07. iBooks.) Roden explains his loyalty towards Jaron to Orison, saying that he owes him his life. He says that he marvels about how he got to be the captain of Jaron's men. Meanwhile, Jaron is listening closely from behind a tree trunk commenting once in a while in his head about what they are saying about him and his story.
